Model United Nations Teams Up with Breakthrough SJC; Enjoys Successful Month of Conferences

A busy month for the club included three conferences and a new partnership to help prepare students for college.
Breakthrough SJC’s middle school year program kicked off in October with 60 students in grades 7 and 8, 65 tutors from six local high schools and a new partnership with the St. Margaret’s Model United Nations (MUN) student-run club. As part of preparing students for college, the new partnership with MUN supports students in developing public speaking, interpersonal communication, and critical thinking skills to ensure that they are more informed global citizens. The partnership arose through the proactive leadership of two St. Margaret’s seniors, Anika Grover and Makenna Mitchell. The two MUN student leaders identified a need to teach local students about civic engagement through “public speaking and the ability to solve issues diplomatically.”

“Every week at MUN Breakthrough, students are learning how to become global citizens who have the confidence to voice their thoughts and opinions in the world community. We want to help students embrace public speaking, not be scared of speaking in front of large groups of people,” Grover said.

Model UN Collects Plenty of Hardware at October Conferences

The start of the new partnership came amidst a busy and successful month of October for the Model UN club. Attending three conferences in a four-week period, the team collected 10 individual awards, a best small school delegation award and two gavels for best delegate in their respective committees.

The month began in Cerritos, where six of the 10 students attending won
Awards of Excellence. A powerhouse among Model UN programs, Cerritos was a great experience for the novice students attending. It had just the right amount of training, humor, diplomacy and competition and does not require either country profiles or positions papers. The six winners of the Award of Excellence in Cerritos were Bella Karahalios, Leila Sapra, Declan Landau, Lauren Spalding, Thomas Hughes and Julia Martin.

Next was Edison, perhaps the most rigorous high school conference in Orange County. Six students attended the advanced two-day conference at Edison High School where the school was honored with the Best Small School Delegation. This was St. Margaret’s third consecutive Best Small School Delegation earned at Edison.

The month ended with a one-day conference at the University of California, San Diego. TritonMUN is known for its original committees, knowledgeable chairs, and rigorous discourse. Opening with a keynote speaker from San Diego’s Diplomacy Council, the tone for the conference was quickly and decidedly different from the two earlier forums. Four students were recognized at the end of the day for their superior diplomacy, tact, and ability to work with others. Anika Grover earned a verbal commendation, Declan Landau was recognized as an Outstanding Delegate and both Bella Karahalios and Joey Westendorf were awarded Gavels as the Best Delegate in their respective committees.

The next MUN Conference is BruinMUN at UCLA on November 12-13, with 13 Tartans attending. MUN meets every Tuesday at lunchtime in room 763.
