Cyber Security Expert Enlightens AP Computer Science Students

Homeland security expert and St. Margaret’s alumnus Lance W. Larson, PhD, paid a visit to the EDGE Lab this week to provide insight to AP Computer Science Principles students into the world of cyber security.

Dr. Larson is the Assistant Director of San Diego State University's graduate program in homeland security. His expertise has grown through years of government consulting and his previous tenure as a law enforcement officer, dealing specifically with internet crime.

Lynn Ozonian, St. Margaret’s director of innovation and technology, arranged the visit for her
class with the hopes that all who were interested could attend. You could hear a pin drop as Dr. Larson captivated the group with real-world examples of attacks on personal information. Student Peter Gottlieb mentioned being shocked by the value of someone’s identity online, and how simple it is for someone to acquire information.

Dr. Larson said that with technology advancing at such a rapid rate, it is important to stay up to date. Whether this is gaining a better understanding of the devices and applications being used or even as simple as downloading new phone updates in a timely manner, staying informed is often the best way to stay protected.

Dr. Larson presented a case where a phone application looked legitimate, but when his team looked at the permissions, the app was collecting intelligence--including location, data and was even allowing remote access to the phone.

The room was enlightened to the vulnerabilities people face every day and it was evident that students were giving their current practices a second thought.
