Lower School Students Honor Father Rob at Final Chapel

Lower School students filled the Chapel with colorful footprints, heartfelt wishes and a few pairs of fun socks Tuesday morning as they honored The Reverend Canon Robert Edwards, affectionately known as Father Rob, during his final Lower School Chapel.

Father Rob is retiring after 30 years of service to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and School. To mark his final Chapel with Lower School students this week, each class created a cardstock footprint that was assembled into a path leading out of Chapel — a symbolic send-off for the many steps ahead.

The tribute was especially fitting for Father Rob, who plans to spend more time hiking in retirement. Students and classes were also invited to donate pairs of themed socks, a nod to a playful wish that he “put his best foot forward” in retirement.

Grade 5 student leaders Chloe and Ella spoke of the Lower School’s gift in Chapel, saying “Each student has contributed to a footstep along the way, just to get you started and so you know we are cheering you along as your step into this new path. We will be thinking of you, Father Rob, as we step into this new stage for St. Margaret’s. We will think about your guidance, leadership, kindness and wisdom. We hope you will also think of us as you take the next steps, pull on some fun socks and enjoy a well-earned retirement.”

Father Rob’s final Lower School Chapel also offered a moment to reflect on the messages of faith and wonder he has shared with students throughout his years at St. Margaret’s.

One of his memorable homilies featured an experiment with colored water, much like a chemistry-class demonstration. As the different colors were combined, some changed into new colors while others bubbled and swirled like lava. Students watched with a chorus of enthusiastic “ooohs” and “ahhhs.”

The demonstration became a lesson about the nature of God — a God with a childlike heart full of joy, curiosity and excitement.

Earlier this school year during the All-School Opening Ceremony, the school formally recognized Father Rob’s three decades of service by appointing him to Professional Community Emeritus, the highest honor bestowed upon a member of the professional community. The distinction is reserved for individuals who have served St. Margaret’s for at least 25 years.

As part of the recognition, Father Rob received an Emeritus Certificate, a St. Margaret’s chair engraved with his name and years of service, and a school quilt.

Now, as he prepares to begin retirement, the Lower School’s footprint path offers a fitting farewell — a visible reminder of the many years Father Rob has walked alongside the St. Margaret’s community and a blessing for all the steps still to come.
