St. Margaret’s entire Middle School connected outside of the traditional classroom setting this week with a three-day retreat at the Pali Institute Outdoor Education Center.

The overnight retreat, set against crisp fall weather in Running Springs, brought together advisory groups and grade levels for meaningful bonding. Kylie Middlebrook, Middle School director of community life, expressed that students thrived in an environment designed to foster connection and belonging. “We loved seeing the strengths and personality of several students we have been eager to get to know,” she said.

The faculty observed that the retreat allowed students’ strengths and personalities to emerge, particularly among those new to the community. For these new students, the retreat was an opportunity to bond with peers and feel welcomed at St. Margaret’s.

“When students feel connected from the very beginning, it makes all the difference,” Mrs. Middlebrook said, emphasizing the importance of early connections for a sense of belonging. “These shared moments help students build trust and strengthen bonds, contributing to a supportive culture that will continue into the coming school year.”

Each grade participated in distinct activities: grade 6 tried watercolor-in-nature sessions and participated in a night hike; grade 7 engaged in outdoor improv and the high ropes course; and grade 8 took part in wilderness survival skills and archery.
