Lower School Outdoor Mindfulness Class Immerses Students in Nature

Lower School students visited La Novia Farm recently to participate in a spiritual practice class held outdoors, providing a hands-on introduction to mindfulness and the natural world. The class was led by Lower School spiritual practice teacher Jessie Akers, while Garden and Plant Science Educator Pam Conti conducted a guided tour of the farm.

"Our goal was to invite students to slow down, exhale, and notice the beauty and wonder of the natural world," said Ms. Akers. “It was truly beautiful to watch our Lower School students become absorbed in their surroundings, follow their curiosity, and discover the joy of simply being present in nature.”

Throughout the lesson, students were encouraged to slow down and engage all five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—as they explored the vibrant farm environment. From observing butterflies and birds to hearing the wind rustle through pepper trees, the activities immersed students in the sensory richness of La Novia Farm. According to Ms. Akers, guided mindfulness exercises prompted students to record their observations, deepening their connection with nature.

With La Novia Farm just a short walk from St. Margaret’s campus, Lower School students will have ongoing opportunities to explore, learn, and connect with the land—and their lunch—on a deeper level.
