More than 40 Middle School students shined on stage at the McGregor Theatre last week, for a comedic production of How to Survive Being in a Shakespeare Play, a student-led performance that reimagined some of William Shakespeare’s most well-known tragedies through a modern, humorous lens.

The production featured a series of fast-paced vignettes that recast familiar Shakespearean storylines as “survival guides,” blending classic text with contemporary comedy and unexpected twists. Cast and crew members delivered a performance marked by ensemble energy, physical comedy, and inventive staging that kept audiences engaged throughout the show.

According to Middle School Theater Director Katie DeShan, the production incorporated several playful creative elements that drew strong audience reactions. Assistant Director Cori Samskey also contributed to bringing the production a distinctly modern tone while maintaining its Shakespearean foundation. Highlights included a choreographed dance sequence set to “Wipe Out” and a comedic moment underscored by Reba McEntire’s “I’m a Survivor.” The production reflected a broader approach that blended theatrical tradition with pop-culture references.

Performances ran for three nights and highlighted the work of student performers and student production crew members. Congratulations Tartans for an amazing production!
