Grade 1 students attended an educational field trip to the renowned In-N-Out Burger restaurants in Rancho Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano, combining a hands-on learning experience with a taste of sustainability in action. The visits formed part of the class’s exploration of Global Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Upon arrival, grade 1 students were greeted by In-N-Out’s dedicated staff, who led them on an informative behind-the-scenes tour. The young learners discovered how the popular restaurant maintains its high standards of food safety, reduces waste, and upholds sustainable practices throughout its operations. Staff members highlighted the importance of sourcing fresh ingredients responsibly and minimizing environmental impact, lessons that aligned perfectly with the students’ classroom studies.

“The visit really helped our students connect what they’re learning in class to real-life situations,” said Lauren Johnson, grade 1 teacher. “They were able to see how responsible choices in food production and consumption can make a difference.”

The field trip deepened grade 1 students' understanding of sustainability but also offered an engaging look at the teamwork and effort that go into running a busy restaurant. The learning experience connected recycling, packaging, and energy efficiency lessons, igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for environmentally mindful practices. To conclude the visit, the students enjoyed a meal together after their educational tour.

The outing served as a meaningful bridge between classroom learning and the real world, reinforcing key ideas about sustainability, food systems, and the impact of everyday choices.

As Ms. Johnson noted, “It’s one thing to talk about responsible consumption, but seeing it in action makes the lesson unforgettable.”
