St. Margaret's football picked up an important league victory.
St. Margaret's football program had a big homecoming win this past Friday, downing Esperanza 21-14. The win puts the Tartans at 1-2 in league play and in fourth place with two crucial games against Garden Grove (0-3) and Westminster (1-2) remaining.
The Tartans got on the board first with a fumble recovery by Dylan Otto deep in the Aztecs' end, setting up a six-yard TD strike by Kai Letcher (7/12, 78 yards, 2 TD) to Jack Kleinhanzl (4 rec/ 67 yards, 2 TD) early in the second quarter. Esperanza quickly countered with a long TD pass, sending the teams to halftime with the Tartans leading 7-6.
Midway through the third quarter, Jack Klausner scooped up an Aztec fumble, taking it 48 yards to the house to put the Tartans up 13-6. Mason Allison (3/3 PATs) put it through the uprights to make it 14-6 Tartans. A big Tartan defensive effort led by Sebastian Salazar (17 total tackles), Andrew Toubin (1 int, 5 tackles), Sawyer Collins (2 sacks, 1 caused fumb, 7 tackles) and Nathan Smith (1 int, 4 tackles) kept Esperanza on the back foot most of the third quarter. Kai Letcher again found Kleinhanzl on a long throw and touchdown to put the Tartans ahead 21-6 to end the third.
A late Aztec threat after a Tartan pass was intercepted led to an Esperanza score and two-point conversion late in the game. A desperate onside kick by the Aztecs was ultimately recovered by the Tartans with not much time left to play. A Tartan punt and defensive stand sealed the win for St. Margaret's.
The Tartans look to pick up a win against a struggling Garden Grove team on the road on Thursday, October, 23.
