Led by Two Individual Champions, Tartan Track & Field Has Strong Showing at CIF-SS Finals
Everett Capelle and Mark Cyr take gold in the 1600m and discus, respectively.
St. Margaret's track & field program had a tremendous day at the CIF-SS Div. IV Finals held at Moorpark High School this past weekend.
"What an exciting day for our team," said head coach Edgar Vazquez. "The coaching staff had been talking about how good this team is this year, and I was thrilled to see the kids finally show just how great they are!"
A pair of individual champions propelled the boys squad to a 5th-place team finish.
Everett Capelle took home gold in the 1600m race, battling a deep field before taking charge at the 800m mark and leading the final two laps. Capelle would claim the crown by 3 seconds with a time of 4:16.47.
Mark Cyr won gold in discus, digging himself out of a substantial hole after fouling his first throw, Cyr recovered to third place with his second toss, then gave it his all on his final throw to clear the leader by 8 feet for a personal and school record of 156'11".
Leo Curran medaled in the pole vault, finishing 5th with a mark of 10-01, while Nick Holland placed 7th with a height of 9-01. The boys 4x400 relay squad of Ryan Sheikholeslami, Malachy Proctor, Brayden Brisbois and Lucas Monge rounded out the day with a 3:33.50 time, good for an 8th place finish.
On the girls side, Joyce Li notched a 3rd place finish in an exciting 3200m event, pushing herself to finish 2 seconds behind the champion with a time of 11:28.38.
The girls 4x100 team of Malia Todd, Annika Garner, Sophia Kistler and Helena Garner found themselves on the podium with a 5th-place-finishing time of 50.05, while Ava Klausner placed 7th in the high jump at 4'10".
"I want to thank the seniors for being great leaders this year, and helping our young team feel very welcome to our program, a family," said coach Vazquez. "For the boys to finish 5th in a CIF Championship is incredible and the team should be very proud of what they accomplished this season. I am forever grateful for our senior class and wish them all the best in their next chapter of life."
