Tartan Boys Lacrosse Wins CIF-SS Div. I Championship!

The Tartans win their first championship since 2019 with a 10-9 win over Loyola.
St. Margaret's boys lacrosse program realized a long-held goal of bringing home a CIF-SS lacrosse championship Friday, downing Loyola High School 10-9 in the Div. I Final at Fred Kelly Field in Orange.

Johnny Iavarone bagged the eventual game-winner with 1:51 left to play as the Tartans contested a tight back-and-forth match against a talented Cubs squad. Loyola broke out in the third quarter, going on a 3-0 run to pull ahead with an 8-7 lead. The Tartans regrouped and tied the game as the third quarter came to a close. The final frame saw the Cubs tie it at 8-8 before The Tartans capitalized on a man-up situation in the final 2 minutes, resulting in the Iavarone goal, assisted by Andrew Toubin. With the clock running out and again man down, Loyola couldn't generate a scoring attempt before time expired, and the triumphant Tartans rushed the field as champs.

"Im just so happy for our guys, our seniors, who set out to accomplish this goal," said St. Margaret's head coach Brian Kelly. "Success is sometimes not very linear, but these players answered the call at every opportunity. I'm just so proud of them."

Austin Hicks capped a fantastic season, leading all scorers with 5 goals. Freshman Brody Booen notched 2 goals, with Caswell Friedman, Johnny Iavarone and Adam Horcasitas all adding a goal a piece. Defenseman Matt Arena was a force for the Tartans 3 forced turnovers and an assist. Goaltender Eben O'Brien made 12 saves in the win.

"This win really is a validation of the long history of success of this program," Coach Kelly said. "The players, the alumni, the coaches; Glen Miles and Gerry Manning before me, it has all led up to this moment."

The win is the 2024 season's pinnacle, as St. Margaret's went 20-2 and did not lose to a Southern Section opponent. St. Margaret's first CIF-SS sanctioned championship elevates the 2024 team to the annals of Tartan lacrosse history, joining the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Championship teams of 2013, 2015, and 2019, and the 2005 State Club Championship squad.
