St. Margaret's Episcopal School is pleased to announce that two student-athletes from the Class of 2024 have committed to play intercollegiate athletics next year during the fall national signing period. Seniors Max Ruff and Reed Wainwright will continue their academic pursuits and play their respective sports at an impressive group of colleges and universities.
"Today we proudly celebrate two outstanding student-athletes," said St. Margaret's Director of Athletics Dan O'Shea. "Max Ruff and Reed Wainwright have represented this school as fierce competitors and outstanding leaders at St. Margaret's. As mentioned in our presentation, only 7 percent of all high school athletes are able to continue on in their sport of choice at the collegiate level, but we are equally impressed with their emphasis on the classroom."
Max Ruff, The University of Chicago
Max Ruff has committed to study and play football at NCAA Div. III The University of Chicago in Chicago.
Max, a two-year starter at quarterback for the Tartans, recently led St. Margaret's to a share of the Orange Coast League Championship while throwing for 2,519 yards and 32 touchdowns during the 2023 campaign. Max, a team captain and 2023 Orange Coast League Co-MVP, was also named a first-team all-league member in 2022, has set multiple school passing records and earned recognition as an Elite 11 regional honoree. Max has also competed for the school as a St. Margaret's track & field student-athlete.
Away from the gridiron, Max has excelled academically, having been named a five-time Head of School Honors awardee and setting a high bar on what it means to be a student-athlete at St. Margaret's. Max has also served as co-president of the Admission Ambassadors, serving the school and prospective St. Margaret's students and families, as well as a tutor within the Tartan Tutors club on campus.
Max intends to major in economics with an emphasis in finance at the University of Chicago.
Reed Wainwright, Stanford University
Reed Wainwright, a member of the Tartans' 2022 CIF-Championship squad, has committed to continue his volleyball and academic career at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
Reed, an accomplished and versatile athlete, earned First-Team All-CIF recognition in 2023, CIF Player of the Year honors in 2022 and Orange Coast League MVP honors in 2022 and 2023. Reed also is a member of the basketball program at St. Margaret's.
Reed was also a key member of the USA U-19 volleyball team
that swept the Pan American Cup in 2022, bringing home the title for the first time in USAVB history. Reed's Balboa Bay Volleyball Club team also won the Junior National Championship at the U-15 and U-17 levels and Reed has earned All-American honors twice.
"Here at St. Margaret's, we are thrilled that we annually have between 17-20 percent of our athletes continuing to play collegiate sports, and many of them at some of the top universities in the country," said O'Shea. "Though we aspire to celebrate all of our student-athletes every day on campus, we welcome this particular opportunity for these two to be featured signees as graduating 2024 seniors."
