Girls Golf Brings Home Second Place at CIF Team Tournament
The Tartans battled through adverse conditions and formidable opponents.
St. Margaret's girls golf program gritted through windy and slick conditions to place second at the CIF-SS Div. II Team Tournament Monday at the Vineyard Course at River Ridge in Oxnard. Southern California's famed Santa Ana winds and a pool of highly competitive teams combined to make Monday's championship one for the ages.
The highly rated Tartans trailed most of the day by 3-8 strokes before catching fire through the home stretch. Jessica Liu produced a strong outing, shooting a 68 (-4), including two birdies, while Annie Weng (77, +5) eagled her 16th hole to bring the Tartans within striking distance of the top of the leaderboard. Despite the furious activity towards the end of the round, the Tartans found themselves tied at 398-398 with Crean Lutheran. A tiebreaker mechanism measuring the top five players' scores out of six afforded the Saints the No. 1 spot and the championship.
St. Margaret's Scores: Jessica Liu 68 (-4) Gabby Eifrig 73 (+1) Annie Weng 77 (+5) Madison Lewis 87 (+15) Rianne Ke 93 (+21) Talia McElfish 115 (+43)
The Tartans await the results of the seeding for the SCGA Team Qualifier Tournament, which may very well see St. Margaret’s included based on its No. 2 finish in Div. II.
Congratulations, Tartans, on an undefeated regular season and CIF-SS postseason success!
