Senior Everett Capelle Shines at Woodbridge Cross Country Invitational
Capelle shattered a 12-year-old school record Saturday.
Everett Capelle proved he belonged amongst the nation's best on Saturday night at the Woodbridge Invitational by posting the fastest 3-mile time in school history with a blistering 14:15. Tartan distance running legend and California State Champion Billy Gaudreau previously held the record at 14:26 when he established the stellar mark at the 2011 Woodbridge Invitational.
The loaded field contained six of the top 25-ranked teams in the nation and over 20 of the top individual runners in the nation. Capelle now sits at No. 24 in the country following his performance over the weekend. "This summer Everett made the commitment to do the quality of work required to be an elite distance runner, and it's really starting to show," said head coach Patrick Bendzick.
Capelle opened the race in the top 50 amongst a field of 267, passing the mile mark at 4:37. From that point forward, he methodically ran down 26 of the best high school runners to finish 19th overall. "He looked so calm and poised during the entire race, but how he attacked the final mile was truly extraordinary," coach Bendzick added. "It might be the most talented field of any race in the country this season, and he was running right by national finalists and state champions. He left no doubt regarding his talent and ability."
Capelle and the Tartans will have this week off from racing and then shift their focus to the first league meet of the year on September 27 at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado.
