PHOTOS: Students Compete Head-to-Head in Middle School Math Bee

With a tournament-style bracket and 11 talented math students on stage, St. Margaret’s Middle School enjoyed a fast-paced, competitive Math Bee featuring students in grades 6-8 in Hurlbut Theater.
The MS Math Bee is part of MathCounts, a national competition program that promotes middle school mathematics in the United States, making math achievement as challenging and exciting as a school sport.
With an enthralled audience watching, students worked quickly against one another solve complex math problems, quickly hitting the buzzer once they feel they have it solved. Each head-to-head matchup was best of three, so the most correct answers after three problems advanced in the competition.
The overall winner ended up being grade 8 student Riley Bredall, who beat grade 7 student Megan Mohler in the final. Grade 8 student Amy Yao placed third.
Joining the top three on stage were Reese Maciarillo, Ben Viola, Audrey Ma, Fiona Fei, Zihe Yuan, Steven Wang, Owen Wang and Gloria Zhou.
The top four will advance to the Orange County Chapter competition, which will take place in February at the University of California, Irvine.
Congratulations to all the participants!
