Tartan Basketball Programs Find Early Success Against Talented Opponents
St. Margaret's basketball programs have opened the winter season on a positive note and look to build upon the previous season's success.
The Tartans opened the 2022-2023 campaign with an 81-45 win over visiting Fairmont SJC Thursday evening.
The Tartans were led by Cameron Danz's 23 points with five three-pointers on nine attempts, while Russell Frye notched 15 points with 13 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals. Drew Bowman contributed 19 points in the win for the Tartans.
"It was a really nice start to the season," said head coach Chris Nordstrom. "Fairmont is much improved from last season, and I thought we did a nice job of taking them out of their system."
St. Margaret's will look to improve upon its 1-0 record, facing Pacifica Christian at home on Saturday, Nov. 19. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
St. Margaret's varsity girls basketball team hit the ground running to open the 2022-2023 season, downing Santiago and Capistrano Valley in Mission Viejo Tournament play before falling to a tough Dana Hills squad Thursday evening. Harper Gideons has been a bright spot for the Tartans, leading with 10.3 points and 4.3 steals per game, while Annika Tufo has been tenacious on the boards, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game. Addie West has anchored the defensive effort with 4 steals per game.
"We are excited to finish this opening week strong and look forward to our home opener on Monday night," said head coach Josh Markum.
The Tartans will play in the 3rd place game to finish the Mission Viejo Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 19 and will make their home debut against La Quinta High School at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21.
