Tartans Triumph Over CVCS in CIF-SS Final

St. Margaret's nabs its first boys volleyball title in 10 years with 3-0 win.
St. Margaret's boys volleyball program were crowned CIF-SS Div. IV champs Saturday evening, holding off a tenacious Capistrano Valley Christian squad with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-18) sweep of the Eagles in the Final.

The Tartans (23-8) trusted in each other and their ability to come out strong, despite the specter of two regular-season losses to CVCS looming in the background. St. Margaret's put that behind them as they battled the Eagles to a tie midway through the opening set before taking control and winning 25-20. The second set started almost the same as the Tartans jumped out to an 8-5 lead before the Eagles went on a 10-0 run to put St. Margaret's on the back foot. However, the Tartans regrouped and rallied behind the stellar play of Reed Wainwright (17 kills) to take the second set 25-23. St. Margaret's put any notion of an Eagle comeback to rest, powering to a 11-5 lead in the third and final set, cruising to its first CIF-SS title in 10 years and third in program history.

The Tartan attack was balanced by Wainwright's 17 kills, 2 assists and 1 ace, Luke Reinkensmeyer's 10 kills and Shane Aitken's 41 assists. Russell Frye and Drew Bowman each had 7 kills, while Luke Balint added 5. The Tartan's serving efficiency was also at 93%, exceptional for a finals match.

"I’m very proud of the boys for putting together their best effort and performance in the CIF Final match," said head coach Bob Yoder. "Shane Aitken did a great job of mixing it up and Luke Reinkensmeyer had a great game at opposite with 10 kills. We had solid production out of both middles, and our usual anchors of Wainwright and Frye played their typically outstanding games."

The Tartans will next embark on CIF State Regional competition, facing Westview on the road in the Div. III bracket. Game is slated for Tuesday, May 17 at 6 p.m.
