Middle School Boys Volleyball Captures P.A.L. Championship
The Tartans battled for their first title since 2019.
St. Margaret's grade 8 boys volleyball team defeated St. Hedwig 2-1 (17-25, 25-15, 15-12) yesterday to claim its first Parochial Athletic League Championship since 2019. The Tartans rode an undefeated regular season record through the playoffs to claim the crown.
The Tartans finished as league champs and the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, yet two opponents loomed large; No. 3 St. John the Baptist and No. 1 St. Hedwig.
St. Margaret's took care of business in the quarterfinals, defeating St. Simon & St. Jude 2-0 but then faced off against St. John the Baptist in the semifinals with a championship berth on the line. The boys stepped up and played one of their best matches of the season with consistent serving, great setting and big hits at the net to take the match in two games.
Up next, the number one seed and a group from St. Hedwig's that had already taken the football and basketball championship this year, so the boys knew it was going to take another spot-on performance to take the title. The stage for the final was set in the Campaigne Center and was packed with parents and students enthusiastically supporting the team. The Tartans' nerves got the best of them in the first game, with St. Hedwig taking it 25-17. Serving took center stage in the second game, as the Tartans were able to build a 9-2 lead and never looked back to take the game 25-15 and move on to a definitive third game. With the final game being first to 15, every point was essential, and both teams responded by battling on the ground, getting blocks at the net and supporting each other between each point. With the game tied at 11-11 the Tartans rattled off four out of the next five points to win the game 15-12 and the Parochial Athletic League Championship!
The win was an exciting and fun way to end the season as their grade 8 classmates rushed the court from the stands to get pictures and congratulate them, celebrating a terrific end to a great season.
