Upper School Students Shine at National Quiz Bowl Championship
St. Margaret’s qualified for the national championships by faring well in regional competitions in Southern California this school year.
St. Margaret’s student-led quiz bowl team recently competed in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ Small School National Championship in Chicago, recording both top-10 team and individual finishes.
The three-student team traveling to Chicago included senior Nate Kang, the SMES quiz bowl team founder and captain, as well as sophomores Nate Minton and Levon Alyanakian. The trio placed seventh overall out of 55 schools in the open division of the team competition.
In the individual competition, Nate Kang placed fourth overall out of more than 600 competitors.
St. Margaret’s team was one of the only teams at the Small School National Championship which was student-led and student-run, and the three-person team making the trip was less than the maximum four players allowed to actively compete in a head-to-head team game. Nonetheless, the team compiled an 11-4 head-to-head record to secure a top-10 finish.
St. Margaret’s qualified for the national championships by faring well in regional competitions in Southern California this school year, often competing against top public schools and private schools with larger teams.
The quiz bowl team is an extension of the student-led history club, which was founded by Nate Kang and is sponsored by Upper School history teacher Simon Fellowes. Other members of the St. Margaret’s quiz bowl team include Alex Fournier, Hunter Smith, Eileen Sadati, Colin Kleinhanzl and Ryan Sheikholeslami.
Congratulations to these talented students on a great year!
