St. Margaret’s Celebrates Lunar New Year With Crafts, Games and Educational Opportunities

The Lunar New Year brought a day of celebration and education in the Lower School and beyond.
St. Margaret’s welcomed the year of the tiger on Tuesday, as the Lunar New Year brought a day of celebration and education in the Lower School and beyond.

Kindergarten students had a day full of activities, as Lower School parents volunteered to join the classrooms via Zoom to explain the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year and answer questions from curious students. Kindergarten students also took part in Lunar New Year crafts throughout the day.

Other educational presentations, many led by students, took place in classrooms throughout the Lower School, including grade 4.

All Lower School students also had the chance to play a game of Lunar New Year Bingo during their recess time, as a fun way to learn more about the holiday. Students also had a free dress day and were encouraged to wear red, a Lunar New Year tradition that symbolizes good fortune.

In the Upper School, the Tartan Inclusivity and Diversity Education student leadership group shared a video explaining the cultural history of the Lunar New Year and explained how the holiday is celebrated to this day.

The Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world, and is also referred to as the Spring Festival in many cultures. The holiday lasts 15 days until the first full moon of the Lunar calendar, and its start date ranges from January 21 to February 20.
