Tartan Girls are CIF-SS Div. V Cross Country Runners-Up
Both the girls and boys cross country squads advance to the California State Championships next week.
The Tartan girls cross country team captured the Runner-Up spot at the CIF Southern Section Div. V Championships, while the boys finished 4th. Both teams will advance to the California State Championships next weekend in Fresno. It will be their 5th consecutive year qualifying for the girls, while the boys have reached the state competition 12 of the past 13 years.
"We enter the CIF Finals with the mindset of winning it each year. Of course, that's not always realistic, but aiming for that lofty goal has helped create a tremendous legacy for both teams," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "I'm always so proud of how our athletes accept that challenge and how important they feel it is to honor the long-standing distance running tradition at St. Margaret's."
Liesel Blau led the Tartans in the girls race, finishing 6th overall and earning All-CIF honors. But the tremendous efforts of two freshmen kept the team locked in a heated battle with Linfield Christian to the finish line. Sarah Bendzick finished 20th, and Coco Johnson finished 27th showing great resolve in the trenches of the race.
The boys 4th place finish was exactly where they were ranked heading into the event, and Everett Capelle established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the division. The talented Sophomore finished 4th, earning All-CIF honors in the process. Junior Kevin Shen was also named All-CIF by finishing 14th out of 177 runners.
"Qualifying for the state championships is a tremendous honor, and we are excited to get back to work on Monday," said Bendzick. "We know there is some room for improvement, and we will do everything in our power to ensure the team is ready."
The California State Championships will be held next Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Live results can be found at https://www.rtspt.com/events/cif/xc2021/, and updates will be posted on @smesathletics social media feeds.
