St. Margaret’s Launches ‘Tartan Dance Company’ for Advanced Upper School Dancers

St. Margaret’s dance program has grown over the past several years and now has four levels of Upper School classes. To Director of Dance Kirsten Harvey, it made sense to build on that growth and launch a new program catered to the school’s most advanced dancers.

That led to the launch of the Tartan Dance Company. Its inaugural year will feature 12 dancers performing together both at school events and dance festivals across Southern California.

“This is a natural progression from our highest-level dance courses, including advanced dance and composition honors,” Mrs. Harvey said. “The company gives the dancers the opportunity to work together outside of school as well as work on larger choreography and performance projects.”

The 12 Upper School students selected this year after an audition are Tori Clark, Czarina Couig, Abbie Eubanks, Emma Evanson, Ella Jia, Caroline Kinsey, Ella Mack, Victoria Palacio, Ella Pintar, Maddie Sapra, Ashley Shanahan and Leah Weiss.

Among the performances these dancers will participate in are events on campus like the Homecoming Pep Rally, Cinema Scream, the Winter Dance Concert, and the Spring Dance Concert. In addition, the group is slated to travel and perform  at the Pasadena Dance Festival, the California Dances Festival, and also take part in a convention experience for students to hone their skills.

Company dance students will utilize a wide variety of styles that include jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, tap, and contemporary modern dance. Some of the company dances will be choreographed by the dancers, and this year Rachel Siegel, a professional dance artist from Los Angeles, will guest teach not only in the school-day program but also set a premiere work on the Tartan Dance Company.
