St. Margaret’s Marks Lunar New Year With Crafts, Celebrations and Storytelling

Students of all ages at St. Margaret’s celebrated the Lunar New Year last week with fun activities and delicious food to ring in the year of the ox.

In the Lower School, students had the opportunity during recess to make their own Lunar New Year drum at one of a number of craft tables set up on the playground. The drum recreates the traditional Bolang Gu Chinese pellet drum, and students could decorate them in their own creative ways.

In addition, the Lower School had an educational video played at Chapel, featuring St. Margaret’s families who celebrate the Lunar New Year and the Chinese New Year. The families shared the holiday’s background as well as their experiences and family traditions from their homelands, including China, Vietnam, Korea and Thailand.

In the Upper School, St. Margaret’s Tartan Inclusion and Diversity Education student leadership group handed out boba to students after Advisory on Friday, and the Middle School passed out small treats during lunch. TIDE students also interviewed Upper School English teacher Kimberly Kim and Upper School science teacher Andrea Chou about their own Lunar New Year traditions, which was played at Upper School Convo last week.

The Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world, and is also referred to as the Spring Festival in many cultures. The holiday lasts 15 days until the first full moon of the Lunar calendar, and its start date ranges from January 21 to February 20.
