St. Margaret’s Receives AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for Second Consecutive Year

St. Margaret’s is one of 1,119 schools nationwide to receive the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, and one of only 288 schools to meet the criteria in AP computer science A.
St. Margaret’s was recognized for its work toward equal gender representation in computer science during the 2019-2020 school year, being awarded the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

St. Margaret’s was recognized for 50 percent or higher female exam taker representation in AP computer science A, a yearlong Upper School elective where students engage in the formal, in-depth study of topics including variables, conditional control structures, abstraction, design, data structures and algorithms. 
St. Margaret’s is one of 1,119 schools nationwide to receive the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award, and one of only 288 schools to meet the criteria in AP computer science A.

“In 2018-19 we also received the Female Diversity award for AP computer science principles. This is a major achievement to receive this award two consecutive years,” said Lynn Ozonian, director of technology and innovation. “I am extremely proud that the majority of young women in our CS program chose to advance their computer science knowledge by electing to move on to our more advanced course. This demonstrates that St. Margaret’s is making major strides when it comes to gender equity in what is typically a male-dominated subject.”

These awards are continued validation of St. Margaret’s longstanding priority to bring more girls into STEAM and computer science in particular. The school’s computer-science curriculum starts in kindergarten and is offered in every grade level through the Upper School.

“We know that the need for leaders in computer science is only going to grow as technology advances, and we want to improve gender equity in this field,” said Angela Mackenzie, director of educational technology and library.

In addition to academic courses, St. Margaret’s has seen an increase in girls joining the school’s robotics teams, and the school’s annual Girls in STEAM symposium has grown in size and scope each year since the inaugural event in 2017.
