Tartans Shine at National Film Festival for Talented Youth

Two Upper School students placed in a short-film competition, then took part in a Q&A to discuss their work.
St. Margaret’s cinematic arts program had a strong presence at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth this year, both in winning honors as well as taking part in discussions and presentations.

The NFFTY was a 10-day virtual event this year with expanded programs and new contests. One competition was a student project called the “Stock Footage Challenge,” a week-long editing competition where students could only utilize stock footage to create a short film pertaining to any social justice issue.

Upper School senior Ryan Krall and sophomore Charlotte Quintanar took on the challenge and put together a film titled “The Healthcare Gap.” Their film won third place in the competition, and Charlotte and Ryan were awarded subscriptions to Storyblocks and AudioSocket, a stock-footage and music database.

“Ryan and Charlotte used Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects to create a unique visual presentation for their film,” St. Margaret’s film teacher Karen Bennett said. “They worked together via Zoom after school and evenings to meet the challenge deadline. I could not be more proud of the meaningful message and well-researched narrative they achieved.”

Afterward, Charlotte and Ryan took part in a Q&A to discuss their film with other participants.

In addition, Ms. Bennett was a presenter at NFFTY, leading a workshop titled “Distance Learning Strategies for Filmmakers” which shared best practices and resources for teaching film in a remote-learning environment. Teachers around the world tuned into the hour-long presentation.

NFFTY is one of the world’s largest festivals for filmmakers under the age of 24.
