Breakthrough SJC Goes Virtual for 15th Summer at St. Margaret’s

Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano’s 15th summer providing academic enrichment opportunities and support for highly motivated students from in and around San Juan Capistrano will have a little different look.
The program has gone virtual this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is working with more than 200 students over four weeks. Pursuing goals of addressing learning loss, building community and having fun, the program continues its work helping highly motivated students under-represented in higher education meet their goal of college graduation.
The students are being taught remotely by 20 teaching fellows spanning four time zones, five core staff, three instructional coaches, five Breakthrough student interns and more than 50 volunteers.
“We are thankful for the many helpful hands that made this unique summer experience a reality,” said Breakthrough SJC Director Alex Serna. “Kingston Technology sponsored our middle school supply distribution and provided our students with materials like binders, water bottles and headphones to engage in our virtual program. The Nicholas Endowment offered generous support so we could purchase Dell laptops to help close any technology students may experience.
“In addition, the teaching fellows, intern, staff, volunteers and families have accepted the challenge of the times and have shown an inspiring determination to continue living Breakthrough’s mission.”
In addition to the mainstay middle school program, Breakthrough is running several other programs including a new grade 10 financial literacy workshop, a literature seminar, a bridge program for rising college freshman and a career readiness series for college students.
Breakthrough SJC is a tuition-free program founded, hosted and sponsored by St. Margaret’s. Nearly all Breakthrough students are from low-income backgrounds and strive to be the first in their families to go to college.
Breakthrough will host a Virtual Visitors' Day at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14. Click here to register.
