Tartan Soccer Teams Pick Up Big Wins

St. Margaret's soccer programs both came out on top this past weekend.
St. Margaret's soccer programs picked up two big wins this weekend as the boys downed league rival Sage Hill on Jan. 10 and the girls soccer program defeated non-league powerhouse Orange Lutheran on Jan. 11.

Boys Soccer

The Tartans relied on a strong second half to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat visiting Sage Hill 2-1 in regular time. Despite the Lightning controlling the game in the first half and scoring on a corner, the Tartans adjusted their formation, which resulted in Sage Hill conceding momentum to St. Margaret's. Stellar midfield play by Dean Chong and Sean Sullivan kept the Lightning on the back foot, allowing Sean Olvera-Harle to slot the equalizer on a Matt Groeninger cross.

Groeninger followed up the assist with a goal of his own, tapping in a loose ball resulting from a scrum in front of the Lightning's goal.

The Tartans return to play on Jan. 16, facing The Webb School on the road.

Girls Soccer

It took the Tartans a half to solve Orange Lutheran's defensive scheme, but St. Margaret's prevailed in the end, notching a 2-0 non-league win.

St. Margaret's matched up well against the Trinity League opponent but were stymied offensively for most of the game. The Tartans were relentless, however, and capitalized on a beautiful pass across the face of goal by Bryce Chan late in the game, allowing Julia Olosky to bang it home to send the Tartans ahead 1-0. The Tartan transition game allowed movement past the Lancers’ backline resulting in a game-sealing goal by Juliet Ballard.

The Tartans will look to continue their success against league opponent Sage Hill on the road on Monday, Jan 13.
