St. Margaret's Cross Country Programs Qualify for CIF-SS Finals
With five newcomers on the line, the Tartan girls cross country team completed a successful attempt at returning CIF Southern Section Finals. The group was aiming to advance with a mid-pack target but ended up winning their heat by 21 points.
"Since July, we have been working on developing the depth of our roster for this moment. To have the luxury of resting four athletes before the CIF Finals is a huge advantage. I'm so proud of our freshman and the leadership of our veterans," said head coach Patrick Bendzick. "They executed the race plan at an incredibly high level, and it was a tremendous display of depth to win the heat while also maintaining a very controlled effort. The team will race all out the next two weekends, and it should be fun to watch."
The boys team will also return to the CIF Southern Section Finals to defend their 2018 championship. They finished second in their heat with the reigning individual champion, Jackson Adelman, tucked away in 18th place.
"There is no advantage to winning the Prelims as it relates to the Finals, so our goal was simply to qualify in a safe and comfortable position. The boys showed a great deal of poise in how they positioned themselves in the pack and executed the race plan," said Bendzick.
The Tartans will return to Riverside next weekend to defend both the boys and girls 2018 team championships. It was the first CIF Southern Section title for the girls program and the first time in school history that both programs brought home championships on the same day. The stage is set for a possible repeat, but the depth of the division will make it a challenge.
