Tartan Girls Make History on New Coed Flag Football Teams

A new Parochial Athletic League rule went into effect this season which allows middle school flag football teams to be coed.

Four St. Margaret’s girls immediately indicated they were ready to play. Grade 7 student Harper Gideons and grade 6 students Annika Garner, Helena Garner and Campbell Healy all participated in the coed flag football program this fall for the Tartans. They were among 16 girls across the Parochial Athletic League to break this barrier.

“I am so proud of our girls for entering uncharted territory with such enthusiasm and for being fully prepared on the field,” said Lori Fava, Middle School athletic director. “Our coaches certainly helped make this a seamless transition and throughout the season all the other players and teams gave the girls their due respect. I am hoping this leads to more of our Tartans girls stepping on the gridiron.”

The teams embraced the new coed format. In an October game, Campbell Healy caught a pass and raced down the sideline to the end zone, becoming the first girl in St. Margaret’s history to score a touchdown at any level. She has cited it as one of the highlights of her school year so far.
