St. Margaret’s Welcomes Equity and Inclusion Expert for Day of Cultural-Competency Work

Yvonne Adams led two sessions with St. Margaret’s professional community from all divisions, and also met with student leadership groups and school administrators.
St. Margaret’s professional community welcomed visiting scholar Yvonne Adams to campus on Monday for a day full of conversations and professional development centered around equity and inclusion work.

Ms. Adams led two sessions with St. Margaret’s professional community from all divisions on creating safe and positive spaces for students on campus through a diversity, equity and inclusion lens.

She also met with the Upper School’s Tartan Inclusion and Diversity Education student leadership group, shared her insight with two separate committees in St. Margaret’s professional community equity team, and had a productive meeting with Head of School Will Moseley, Assistant Head of School for Strategic Initiatives Ryan Dahlem, and Director of Equity and Inclusion Victor Cota.

Ms. Adams is the director of equity and inclusion at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, where she has worked for more than 25 years. School leaders at St. Margaret’s were familiar with her work through presentations at the National Association of Independent Schools annual conference as well as the National Diversity Practitioners Institute.

“Yvonne Adams has been doing this for a long time, and she can advise us on carving our path forward in this work based on her experience in equity and inclusion in an Episcopal school setting,” Mr. Cota said.

Ms. Adams’ visit builds upon the work Mr. Cota is leading, now in his second year as director of equity and inclusion at St. Margaret’s. It also builds on past visits by cultural-competency experts such as Rosetta Lee, Robert Greene Jennifer Bryan and Steven Jones.
