Tartan Cross Country Teams Hit Stride at Cool Breeze Invitational

The girls cross country team opened the season by justifying their #1 CIF Division 5 ranking after winning the Cool Breeze invitation on Friday at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Freshman Liesel Blau stormed to the front of the 3 mile race and took the early lead over a loaded field. She ended up locked in a battle at the 2.5 mile mark with Mia Chavez of Chino and came up just short of the win in her first-ever high school cross country race. Her time of 17:32 matched that of Andi Carnell in 2018. Carnell went on to earn All-State honors later that season and is now running at Boston College.

"We knew Liesel was talented from the quality of her workouts, but she showed that she is also incredibly tough and smart. Few freshmen girls have that level of tenacity and we are very excited to see her progress this season," said head coach Patrick Bendzick.

The girls team of Blau, Madeleine Arundale, Claire Mullen, Kat Collier, Charlotte Jones and Jacqueline Leung posted 67 total points and beat second-place La Canada by 26 points.

The boys team also had a solid opening day behind the front running leadership of Jackson Adelman. He finished 3rd in 15:28 and was followed closely by Calvin Capelle in 5th at 15:39. Capelle shaved over 20 seconds off his 2018 time on this course and looked outstanding in his tactical execution.

Kevin Shen had a stellar performance by finishing 4th out of 210 in the Freshman Boys race. His time of 17:03 was 4th overall on the day for the Tartans and was a clear display of his varsity level talent.

The Tartans will have one more tune-up meet at Laguna Hills on September 14th before opening the league season on October 10th at Mason Park in Irvine.
