PHOTOS: St. Margaret’s Community Serves at Special Camp for 28th Summer
Now in its 28th year serving children and teens with disabilities, Special Camp once again brought summertime joy to more than 210 campers who attended one of four one-week sessions.
Each camper had a personal counselor for a one-to-one camper-counselor ratio that ensured undivided attention and a lasting bond. Many of the counselors, as well as senior counselors and staff members, are St. Margaret’s students and alumni.
Among the activities this summer, campers and counselors went to Doheny State Beach, San Diego Zoo, Knott’s Berry Farm, Chuck E. Cheese, Boomers and Irvine Lanes for bowling.
For campers, Special Camp provides an opportunity to enhance communication skills and social development in a fun summer day camp setting. For the counselors, it was a chance to serve in a nurturing environment that explores the intricacies and needs of the disabled community through patience, maturity, empathy, quick thinking and more.
The camp is overseen by a staff of 10, led by Executive Director Lindsay Eres ’00 and Operations Director Stefani Baker, who completed her 20th summer serving Special Camp in a variety of roles. Other staff members included Tartan alumnae Kate Ramm ‘17, Elizabeth Stephens ‘15 and Katie Schwartz ‘17.
