Tartans Overwhelm in Southern Section Title Game Victory

St. Margaret's avenged a 2018 loss in the championship to claim the 2019 crown with a 13-4 win over Loyola HS.
The Tartans rode a shutout through three quarters to down Loyola HS 13-4 in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section final. The win breaks a three-year title drought for St. Margaret's. Zane Handy was spectacular between the pipes for St. Margaret's, recording fourteen saves, many at crucial moments, to keep St. Margaret's rolling.

"To go through three quarters not giving up a goal was incredible," said Handy. "Our defense executed a total team effort to get us the win."

The Tartans held the Cubs scoreless until Loyola capitalized on a long St. Margaret's penalty at the top of the fourth quarter. Domination at the faceoff x by Stuart Pollard prevented Loyola from generating any momentum all afternoon.

The Tartans received big games from Kevin Groeninger (4g, 3a), Nate Sanchez (4g, 2a), Koa Todd (2g) and John Culley (2g).

The Tartans will retire as the last U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Champions, having won the title previously in 2013 and 2015. The CIF Southern Section will take over the postseason in 2020.

Congratulations, Tartans!
