St. Margaret’s Middle School debate team was honored as a distinguished team and finished second out of 27 teams in win percentage during the Orange County Debate League Spring Tournament at Buena Park High School.
The team of Jake Reeves (grade 8), Reagan Ricker (grade 6) and Emily Chai-Onn (grade 6) went 3-1 on the day, debating four separate motions that address current events and issues in the United States. The motions addressed border security, youth football safety and the rise of the gig economy, and students had to prepare both opposition and proposition sides for each motion. They did not know what side they would be arguing until just before the debate.
In all, the tournament at Buena Park featured 27 teams and more than 300 participants.
The St. Margaret’s Middle School debate team gathers each Monday after school to do research, build arguments, and practice speaking. The team participates in several tournaments a year as part of the Orange County Debate League.
