The events featured activities and education around the diverse ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty and staff.
To recognize, celebrate and learn more about the different cultures represented within St. Margaret’s community, the world languages department hosted Language and Culture Days in both the Upper School and Middle School with activities and education around the diverse ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty and staff.

The Upper School activities included informational and interactive tables set up with culturally inspired games, food and educational lessons. Students visited different tables set up by the French Club, Chinese Club, Breakthrough SJC, the Tartan Inclusivity and Diversity Education (TIDE) student group, as well as Latin and Spanish classes.

The Music Club also provided entertainment by playing international songs and world music during the event, while each world language department performed a musical number in their language to fellow students.

“Language and Culture Day was both an informative and fun way for Upper School students to learn more about the cultural background of fellow Tartans, and the different languages students know or are learning,” said Bryan Sullivan, world languages interim department chair.

Prior to Language and Culture Day, the Upper School dedicated a Convo to celebrating the ethnic diversity on the St. Margaret’s campus. TIDE arranged a panel of students, faculty and staff who went on stage wearing culturally significant clothing and talked about the culture they identify with, including sharing their native language in some cases.

In the Middle School, Language Day was an opportunity to learn more about different cultures with fun creative activities that included a Greco-Roman toga-making contest, good-luck Chinese knots and fans, and Guatemalan Worry Dolls.

“We wanted to lift up the many heritages represented on our campus,” said Victor Cota, St. Margaret’s director of equity and inclusion. “These events were great for students to learn more about the cultures all around us, and how it shapes who we are today.”
