“Dear Hero – Thank you so much for serving our country. Have a happy holiday!”

Given an opportunity to express gratitude, more than 200 St. Margaret’s students wrote thank-you letters last week which will be delivered to U.S. military members spending their holidays overseas.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to help our students have a broader perspective and develop compassion for our service men and women who are protecting our country and are far away from home this Christmas,” said Tupper Spring, director of community life in the Lower School.

The letters were written last week and picked up by St. Margaret’s great-grandparent Marilyn Buster. She delivered them to local nonprofit Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise, which will include the letters with Christmas packages sent overseas.

A “Dear Hero” box was set up during Lower School lunch periods, and many students took time to write personal letters to members of the U.S. armed forces. In addition, letters were written in Lower School and Upper School classrooms.

St. Margaret’s also worked with Words of Comfort, Hope and Promise in March, when students in Grades 1 and 8 collaborated on thank-you letters that were included in Easter Care packages delivered by the organization.
