With an Appetite for Reading, Tartan Students Participate in California Young Reader Medal Program

Students in Grades 4 through 8 culminated the California Young Reader Medal program last week, with a “Vote Party” for those who read all the books within a category.  In the fall, students were challenged to read at least the 3 books nominated in their grade level category with some reading multiple categories.

 

CYRM program is a reading program in which students all over the state read books within a category and vote for their favorites. Winning authors receive the coveted medal. Authors usually say that these state awards are very meaningful because they are the only awards decided upon by the intended audience.  

 

There were 40 St. Margaret’s students in grades 4 and 8 who completed the reading challenge. A few examples of book titles from each category include: “The Elephant in the Room,” by Holly Goldberg Sloan, “A Game of Fox & Squirrels,” by Jenn Reese, “Where I Belong,” by Marcia Argueta Mickelson, and “Bartali’s Bicycle,” by Megan Hoyt.

 

In addition, students in kindergarten through grade 3 read five books in the “Picture Book" category through teacher readings and librarian readings; these Lower School students also voted for their favorite book, too. Voting ends in the State at the end of March. The winning titles, both at St. Margaret’s and in California will be announced in April.
