Professional Community Engages in Division- and Department-Specific Activities During In-Service Day
The in-service day was division- and department-specific, giving the professional community an opportunity to dive into meaningful, collaborative learning experiences with their teams.
St. Margaret’s professional community took part in a valuable in-service day on Monday, participating in a variety of professional-development activities to further the academic and student experience for all Tartans.
The in-service day was designed to be division- and department-specific, giving the professional community an opportunity to dive into meaningful, collaborative learning experiences in the teams with which they work most closely each day. Here is a brief look at how some departments and divisions spent their in-service day:
Early School
The Early School welcomed a guest speaker, Dr. Shelly Counsell, who shared with the ES professional community a presentation titled “Coming to Know Constructivism – It’s a Life Journey.”
The presentation was followed by continuing conversation and reflection led by Early School pedagogista Sonia Yoshizawa. Teachers then worked on documentation and projects in the afternoon.
Lower School
The Lower School did a special professional development and community-building activity around the Lower School House League challenges, the division’s behavioral reward system. Grade-level and special-subject teams also met to further develop curricular units spanning reading, writing, math, social sciences and DEI.
Middle School and Upper School
Upper School and Middle School teachers conducted department-specific professional development, both on campus and away from St. Margaret’s. The activities included:
- Math and science teachers took part in a coding bootcamp, gaining exposure with R and RStudio with the help of Joyce Nguy, a lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles.
- English and history teachers engaged in a day-long professional development around questions of racial justice in the classroom, with Columbia University Teachers College professor Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz leading the workshop.
- World languages teachers visited other local schools to observe Spanish and Chinese classes and discuss best practices.
- The Personal Fitness and Wellness department visited the Elite Athlete Training Facility in Chula Vista, where they observed Olympic athletes, Paralympic athletes, football and rowing athletes participating in practices and workouts. The visit spurred ideas pertaining to curriculum, programming, storage, efficiency, and overall growth for teams, classes, coaches, and professional community.
