Parent Up Speaker Shawn Achor Talks Positive Psychology With Tartan Community

Mr. Achor is one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between happiness and success, and he shared some of his insight with the parent community in Hurlbut Theater.
St. Margaret’s Parent Teacher Fellowship welcomed noted speaker and author Shawn Achor to St. Margaret’s last week as part of the Parent Up Speaker Series and its 2023-2024 theme of ‘Health and Well-Being.”

Mr. Achor is one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between happiness and success, and he shared some of his insight with the parent community in Hurlbut Theater.

Telling the audience that “every outcome rises dramatically when the human brain is positive first,” Mr. Achor shared some of the research behind positive psychology, and some of the advice he has gathered over the years for people of all ages to put their brain in a positive place for whenever challenges rise up.

As he wrapped up his insightful, humorous and inspiring talk, he offered two quick tips for those looking to develop a few new habits that will lead to more positive psychology and more happiness:

  • For 21 days, write down three new things you are grateful for, without repeating any. At the end of the three weeks, there will be 63 unique things with which you are grateful, which will train your brain to seek out positives in your life.
  • Take two minutes each day to offer praise to one person in your life.

The PTF Parent Up Speaker Series is a parent-education initiative by the PTF in collaboration with school leader. Mr. Achor is the second speaker this year, after Sam Kass presented to the parent community in September.

As part of Mr. Achor’s visit, the PTF is also hosting a book club on Feb. 13, discussing Mr. Achor’s book Big Potential.Check out mySMES or the This Week at SMES email to learn more.
