Special Camp a Unique Service-Leadership Experience

Special Camp for Special Kids is a one-of-a-kind program providing a revolutionary educational and recreational summer day camp for youth with disabilities. In a one-to-one peer relationship with volunteer counselors, campers experience a host of traditional summer camp activities: including beach, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the San Diego Zoo trips.

Hosted and sponsored by St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, Special Camp provides an encouraging, loving, and fun environment to enrich participant’s social development, educational objectives, emotional well-being and community awareness.

Founded in 1992, Special Camp also exists to inspire future generations to eliminate the stigma associated with the special needs community through the core principles of compassion, service, opportunity, and love.
The success of Special Camp hinges on the special bond formed between campers and their counselors, who work individually, one-on-one with each other throughout camp. Counselors are high school and college students and have been carefully vetted and selected though a competitive application process for the qualities necessary to fulfill this important role: patience, maturity, empathy, quick thinking and a willingness to serve others. This highly sought counselor experience nurtures personal compassion, responsibility, resilience, leadership and understanding and skills needed to successfully navigate and honor difference in others.

More than half of the 220 counselors come from St. Margaret’s as their experience here nurtures and emphasizes the importance of love and respect for all God’s children and service to community. More than 25 percent of St. Margaret’s Upper School students serve Special Camp annually.

The Koehler Family

"I will never forget my son's five days at this camp; these  were probably the happiest days of his life, not only he felt included; he had the opportunity to interact, share, laugh, had fun, and meet young people that he wouldn't have the chance to meet otherwise."
