2018-2019 Parent Up Speaker Series Concludes With Dr. Michael Thompson

Dr. Thompson gave an engaging and heartfelt presentation on the complex emotional journey children undergo during their school years.
The 2018-2019 PTF Parent Up Speaker Series focused on health and wellness concluded last week with an engaging and heartfelt discussion by Dr. Michael Thompson on the complex emotional journey children undergo during their school years.

Dr. Thompson is an author and psychologist specializing in children and families. He discussed topics from his book The Pressured Child, including the social and emotional realities students face in school, the challenge of a full school day, and why some children adjust to the structure of school better than others. He also spoke to parents about the prospect of seeing their child go down unexpected paths in forging friendships, choosing activities or even picking a college.

Dr. Thompson spent the entire day at St. Margaret’s. He spoke to the faculty and staff, then presented to parents, then spoke to Upper School and Middle School students. He also led small group discussions for parents who had follow-up questions later in the day.

Dr. Thompson’s talk wrapped up a successful and important Parent Up Speaker Series lineup which aligned with the school’s strategic priority to nurture the health and wellness of its students. The series kicked off in October as Dr. Jean Twenge spoke of the growing issue of children and their relationship with technology. Dr. Michael J. Breus then spoke in December about healthy sleep cycles in both children and adults.

The Parent Teacher Fellowship would like to thank Parent Up Speaker Series Chair Katie Kalvoda and Assistant Jen Duran for their hard work and dedication in overseeing the success of this program and for being excellent ambassadors for the school.
