Middle School Musical Seussical Wows the Crowds

The cast and crew entertained more than 1,000 attendees over four performances, bringing to life everyone’s favorite Dr. Seuss characters.
The cast and crew of the 2018 Middle School musical production of Seussical entertained more than 1,000 attendees over four performances last week. The show brought to life everyone’s favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and Jojo, with lessons about commitment, faithfulness, and the importance of kindness.

Under the direction of Dan Pacheco, the talented cast of 33 students delivered a high-energy main-stage production. The set, designed by technical director and resident designer Gordon Richins, filled the stage with Seuss-style pieces inspired by Dr. Seuss books. The costumes, designed by Linda Vick, added bright and bold colors to each of the characters. For the first time in the 450-seat theater, the audience was delighted by video projections created by film teacher Karen Bennett that interacted with The Cat in the Hat (Aili McGregor) and Jojo (Alden Copps) in a scene for “It’s Possible” that seemed to fill the entire house with water and fish.

The vocals of the show were directed by Stacey Miles. Horton (Devin Thomas) delivered “Alone in the Universe”, Gertrude (Michaela Johnson) sang “Notice Me, Horton” and Sour Kanga (Chloe Thompson) led the cast in “Biggest Blame Fool.” Mayzie (Kate Matthew) praised her virtues in “Amazing Mayzie.” The colorful Whos sang from their dust speck to tell the story of “Here on Who” led by Mr. & Mrs. Mayor (Wyatt Fales and Mari Edler).

In addition to acting and singing, the entire cast performed highly choreographed numbers. For many weeks of rehearsal, the cast had choreography coaching from Michelle Hanna and Karen Cahill. There were ensembles numbers and featured dance and acrobatics.
On the technical side, stage manager Jordan Reder and assistant stage manager Natalie Gapinski called cues from the booth, leading their student technical crews alongside professional adults.
