More than 150 Colleges and Universities Visiting St. Margaret’s This Fall

More than 150 colleges and universities have visited St. Margaret’s this fall to meet with Upper School students who are weighing their options and interested in learning more about college opportunities across the country and around the world.

The number of colleges visiting is more than the number of students in the current senior class. Director of College Counseling Roland Allen said students benefit from these visits because they offer a small-group setting to meet with representatives for personal, one-on-one conversations to help students make a more informed college choice. Often, the representatives visiting St. Margaret’s are among the first to read a St. Margaret’s student’s application.

“That makes the application process more personal, because it puts a ‘face’ with the university and can reduce the anxiety a student may feel during the application process,” Mr. Allen said. “In addition, these visits to St. Margaret’s are long enough to allow students to ask any question they have about the application process, the programs offered at the college and student life.”

This list of schools who have visited this year so far is impressive, and includes the University of Notre Dame, Cornell University, Columbia University, University of Oregon, Georgetown University, University of Michigan, The University of Chicago, Syracuse University, New York University and Vanderbilt University. Several international schools have visited as well, including University of Aberdeen and University of St. Andrews in the United Kingdom, and the University of British Columbia in Canada.

Schools like Dartmouth College, Wake Forest University, Belmont University and George Mason University will be at St. Margaret’s over the next couple of weeks as the visits wind down.

It is a busy time for the Class of 2019 with regards to colleges. More than 90 percent of the students typically apply to a college or university by November, and will begin to receive letters of admission through the winter months.
