St. Margaret’s Devotes Day to Service Learning in Middle and Lower School

Middle School students left campus to lend time and effort to help the local community, while Lower School students learned more about service and its importance to the St. Margaret’s experience.
St. Margaret’s had a day devoted to service on Wednesday, as Middle School students left campus to lend time and effort to help the local community, while Lower School students learned more about service and its importance to the St. Margaret’s experience.

Grade 8 students went to Camp Pendleton to serve Operation Help a Hero as part of their theme “Respect the Past, Influence the Future.” Students donated toiletries and cleaning products as well as took part in activities to support troops returning home from deployment, including cleaning barracks and preparing welcome-home bags.

In grade 7, students served at several local organizations which aligns with their service theme of “Know and Understand Our Community.” The students visited local preschools and interacted with young children, and also spent time helping at organizations like Laura’s House, Project Linus and Brookdale Senior Living. The experiences were a chance to serve the San Juan Capistrano community while deepening knowledge and relationships with local residents.

Grade 6 students, meanwhile, spent time at Family Assistance Ministries. They brought in food pantry donations and spent time organizing and re-stocking shelves. In all, grade 6 donated more than 900 pounds of food to FAM.

“When we come together to help people, we get a lot done,” said grade 6 student Emily Guerinot. “It made me happy knowing we were doing something for someone who needed it.”

Lower School
Service Learning Day also served as a kick-off for the Lower School’s service learning program. Faculty introduced each grade level’s service learning theme while helping students understand how service is an integral part of the St. Margaret’s experience.

The grade-level service themes are:

  • Kindergarten: Community, Belonging and our Elderly Friends
  • Grade 1: Community Heroes and Knowing We Are Safe
  • Grade 2: Clean Air
  • Grade 3: Food Security
  • Grade 4: Shelter and the Importance of Home
  • Grade 5: Clean Water

Teachers have worked with Director of Community Life Tupper Spring and PTF Service Learning Coordinator Kat Barnes to align curriculum, field trips and service opportunities to each grade-level theme.
