Tartan Volleyball Sweeps Portola in Early-Season Action

The Tartans downed Portola High 3-0 on Wednesday evening.
St. Margaret's girls volleyball team relied on senior Gracyn Benck's efficient hitting to overpower Portola High 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22). Benck contributed 15 kills, three aces and attained a 0.619 hit percentage on the night. The Tartans also received impressive efforts by Emmy Flornes (12 kills, 2 aces), Mary Collier (5 kills, 2 aces), Jalyn Chun (3 kills, 1 ace) and Lilly Thomas (1 ace).

“Good early season win for our team,” head coach Joaquin Acosta said. “Portola did a good job serving and on defense tonight. I thought our team sustained their service pressure well and did a good job offensively. With the high school season schedule moving up, we have had limited opportunity to train as a team. We have areas that we need to improve, but I’m excited with the outlook of the season. Our players have the right mindset and I think we have a chance to be a very good team.”

With the win, the Tartans are 1-1 in regular season play and head to Capistrano Valley High School for a match on Thursday, August 30 at 5 p.m.
