A new offering in St. Margaret’s Summer program took place off campus –and off land altogether.

The Ocean Life Adventure Fishing program had 22 students grades 3-8 boarding a 65-foot fishing boat out of Dana Point Harbor each day for a week to learn the skill of ocean fishing. Students caught fish ranging from sand bass to barracuda. Some took the caught fish home to eat.

The class was taught by Jen Cuda with help from St. Margaret’s rising senior Scotty Choi, an experienced angler himself.

“The Ocean Life Adventure course was a great example of experiential learning that takes place beyond the classroom during St. Margaret’s Summer,” said Andrew Hammond, director of extensions who oversees the summer program. “Students learned the fundamentals of fishing, water safety, the ecology and sustainability of ocean life and so much more.”

Ocean Life Adventure was one of a number of options offered during St. Margaret’s Summer, which ranges from Upper School academic courses that more than 300 students enrolled in this year to Lower School and Middle School enrichment opportunities.
