Junior Emily Sun Brings Home CIF Gold in the High Jump

Sun cleared 5 feet 3 inches to win the CIF Southern Section Div. IV High Jump.
St. Margaret’s junior Emily Sun won the Division IV high jump competition at last week’s CIF Finals, clearing 5 feet 3 inches to improve on her previous school record. The individual championship put a great day in motion as the largest St. Margaret’s contingent in school history (16 athletes) set a school record and collected seven All-CIF honors.

With the win, Emily is the first CIF individual champion for St. Margaret’s in track & field since Lara Ohanesian medaled in the discus in 2014.

“It’s a special moment anytime an athlete wins a CIF title, but nobody is more deserving of that moment than Emily. She has earned every bit of this honor through countless hours of hard work and an unwavering commitment to her event. We are incredibly proud of her,” said St. Margaret's Track & Field Head Coach and Director Of Athletics and Physical Education Patrick Bendzick.

The girls 4x400 relay team of Molly Green, Jada Thomas, Taryn Wilson and Lauren McCaffrey took down a 16-year-old school record with a 4th-place finishing time of 49.46. Wilson and McCaffrey end their careers at St. Margaret’s holding records in both relays. They set the 4x400 relay mark of 4:04.16 last year in the CIF Finals.

The Tartan distance runners peaked at the right time of the year as Andi Carnell finished 6th in the 1600m at 5:09.08 and Matt Soto also collected a season best of 5:29.19.

Peyton Herrera ended her high school career with All-CIF honors after finishing 4th in the pole vault at 10-0. Nathan Soto also collected an All-CIF designation in the pole vault with a 5th-place finish at 12-0. Soto had several clearances at an earlier height that were well above the bar, but a broken pole in his final attempt at 12-0 ended his competition earlier than hoped.

For the majority of the team, this brings a very successful 2018 season to an end. However, Emily Sun will continue and attempt to make the California State Championships on Saturday, May 26 at the Masters Meet. A finish in the top seven, or a clearance of 5-4 will allow her to advance.
