Girls Lacrosse Dominates in First Southern Section Title in Ten Years

The Tartans defeated Redondo Union 17-6 to win the U. S Lacrosse Southern Section Championship for the first time since 2008.
The Tartan girls lacrosse team left no doubts on the field as it rolled over an experienced Redondo Union Sea Hawk squad 17-6 in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section title game Saturday at Newport Harbor High School. Despite a slow start, the Tartans embarked on a 9-3 scoring run, taking a secure 10-4 lead into halftime.

The second half was all St. Margaret's, keeping the Sea Hawks scoreless for a solid 12 minutes and with the Tartans scoring at will. A big part of the Tartan defensive effort was senior goalkeeper and Southern Section Final MVP, Ellie Jones. Jones kept the Tartan momentum flowing, making key saves, many times at point blank range, on the few Sea Hawk scoring chances.

"This win feels incredible; it is something the seniors have been working toward and building to our whole careers. To overcome our slow start today we fired up our positive mental attitude in the second half to get it done," Jones said.

Offensively, the Tartans were led by Maddie Barkate's five goals and two assists. Niki Miles and Cailin Young contributed for eight goals, with four each, while Campbell Case had three goals and three assists. Kinsale Hueston notched a goal, and Jordan Miles added an assist.

St. Margaret's was also unstoppable at the dot, winning 17 of 25 draws. Barkate and Young combined for 11, with six and five wins respectively.

With the victory, the Tartans capture their first U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section title since 2008.

Congratulations Tartans, on an amazing season!
