Girls Lacrosse Captures U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Crown
The Tartans had a huge second half to claim the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Championship with a 14-9 victory over Mater Dei.
St. Margaret's girls lacrosse team defeated 2017 Champion Mater Dei 14-9 behind a ten-goal second half and dominance at the face-off dot.
Despite trailing 5-3 with a minute left before halftime, the Tartans exploded for a 5-0 scoring streak over seven minutes to take control of the title game. The Tartans, led by senior Cailin Young's ten draw controls, were ferocious at the face-off dot, gaining possession at crucial points in the game. Winning 21 of 25 draws kept the Monarchs out of the game and perpetually on defense.
The Tartan offense was provided by Maddie Barkate's five goal and three assist performance with Niki Miles contributing four goals on the evening. Cailin Young added three goals while Campbell Case notched two. Goalkeeper Ellie Young kept the Tartans in it throughout the game, recording four saves.
"This win is a cumulative effort of many years of hard work by the girls on this team. A lot of blood sweat and tears and hard work in the offseason got us to this point, and it was great to be able to show off the result of that hard work for 50 minutes tonight," said Tartan Head Coach Holly Reilly.
Cailin Young was named the tournament's MVP with twelve goals and one assist over four games.
With the win, St. Margaret's (17-1) claims it's first Orange County Championship since 2008 and will face Redondo Union (18-2) for the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section title on Saturday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at Newport Harbor High School.
