Tartan Athletics in Playoff Action
The Tartans are wrapping up the spring season with postseason appearances.
The spring athletic season is drawing to a close but not before St. Margaret's varsity squads make a run at their respective playoffs.
Boys and Girls Lacrosse
Both St. Margaret's lacrosse programs have advanced to the U.S. Lacrosse Orange County Semifinals. The girls defeated Beckman High School 12-6 behind Maddie Barkate's four goals and two assists. Jordan Miles contributed three goals and one assist. The 14-1 Tartans will take on the 11-6 Trabuco Hills Mustangs at Segerstrom High School on Saturday, May 5 at 11 a.m.
The boys team overcame a 4-3 deficit at halftime to down Great Oak High School 13-7 to punch the ticket to the semis. St. Margaret's received huge efforts from Kevin Groeninger (4g, 3a) and Koa Todd (3g, 1a) while netminder Zach Handy pulled out many clutch saves despite a shaky start. St. Margaret's (17-2) will face Santa Margarita (14-5) on Saturday, May 5 at Segerstrom High School. Game time is slated for 12:45 p.m.
Tennis
Peter Gottlieb and Jay Phansalkar captured the Academy League doubles crown, defeating Sage Hill 6-0, 6-4 on Thursday. Matt Rosenthal finished No. 2 in Academy League singles play. The Tartans, who were 11-3 on the year, will move on to CIF competition beginning Tuesday, May 8.
Volleyball
St. Margaret's, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Div. III, coasted through Academy League play with an undefeated record before closing out the regular season with a close loss to Div. I power Trabucco Hills.
Head Coach Jeremy Dailey remarked, "If we can go out and compete and respond when we are down, we are setting ourselves up to be successful in the coming weeks. Our goals are to constantly be improving. We improved against Trabuco, and we’ll continue to build off this and work each day to get a little better."
The Tartans will hope to keep their inspired play up as they host the First Round of the CIF Southern-Section Playoffs Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m.
Swimming and Diving
The Tartans finished the regular season with five Academy League champions: Owen Young in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Grace Zhou in the 50 freestyle (with a new school record of 25.47), Parker Ryan in diving and the 200 freestyle relay team of Rowdie Peets, James Whiting, Owen Young and Mathew Josephs (1:35.11, a new school record). The same group also broke the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.94.
“The aquatics program had an exceptional year that truly rewrote the school record books. We had swimmers at every level move up in the standing after hard-fought races in the pool. The second-place team finish on the men’s side was the highest finish ever for St. Margaret’s and we’re excited for what the future holds for our program,” said Head Coach Edmund Herlihy.
Grace Zhou and Owen Young's results are under CIF consideration for qualification in the CIF Div. II Championships scheduled for next week. Check the athletics website for up-to-date schedules.
Track and Field
The Tartan track and field program pulled away with two Academy League titles at the finals on Thursday evening. Newcomer Tomas Anderson Comas notched his second school record with an impressive 49.75 winning time in the 400m while also anchoring the 4x400m Relay team of Matt Colglazier, Matt Soto and Chris Chan to a win with a 3:27.69.
On the girls side, the team combined for a 12-point victory to capture St. Margaret's second consecutive Academy League title. Taryn Wilson contributed a total of 38 points with wins in the 100m, 200m and the third leg of the 4x400m.
The Tartans will journey to Carpinteria to partake in the C.I.F. Prelims on Saturday, May 12.
Golf
The Tartan golf program, 9-7 overall and 5-3 in Academy League play, will enter the CIF South Coast team Divisional round on Tuesday, May 15. The match will be played at Talega Golf Club with a 7 a.m. start time. Michael Etchandy has qualified for CIF Individual play which begins Monday, May 7 at Skylinks Golf Club with a 1 p.m. start.
Baseball
Coming off a 13-0 drubbing of Academy League foe Brethren Christian, the Tartans look to close out league competition with back to back games against rival Sage Hill School. St. Margaret's currently sits at No. 2 in the Academy League behind Crean Lutheran and will look to make a run at the CIF Tournament beginning Tuesday, May 15.
