St. Margaret’s Track and Field Program Earns Two Academy League Team Titles
After a regular season of hard-fought battles, the Tartans showed their resiliency in clinching both team championships this past Thursday at the Academy League Finals.
On the boys’ side, the team displayed a steadfast belief in the process of improving after suffering an 11-point loss to Crean Lutheran in the first Academy League Meet and a four-point loss in the second. This time, the Tartans posted a convincing 46-point victory to clinch the title.
“It was a total team effort with points earned across all 16 events. It didn’t take long to realize that they were laser focused and committed to finishing the league portion of the season on a winning note. It was an impressive showing by a terrific group of young men,” said Head Sprint Coach Mike Allison.
Tomas Anderson Comas earned his second school record in the 400m with a blistering 49.75-second winning time. He returned to the track later that day to win the 200m convincingly in 22.19 and then anchor the 4x400m Relay team to a winning time of 3:27.69. That relay group of Matt Colglazier, Matt Soto, Chris Chan and Tomas Anderson narrowly missed the school record by just .68 of a second.
Things were a bit closer on the girls’ side. After winning the previous two league meets by narrow margins, the Tartans entered the championship with a target on their backs. However, a balanced mix of all four grade levels combined for a 12-point victory to earn their second consecutive league title in a complete team effort.
Senior leader Taryn Wilson won the 100m and 200m and ran an impressive third leg of the winning 4x400m. She contributed 38 total points to the cause, and her dominant performances were a clear shift in momentum for the Tartans.
“The team committed to producing a complete 16-event effort. We knew if we could get to the 4x400m relay within reach of the lead, that group could close things out for us. Although we pride ourselves in the relays because they are a clear display of the team aspect in the sport, it was even more rewarding to see the immense contributions that were taking place across all the event groups. It was an impressive collective effort, and we couldn’t be more proud of the athletes,” stated Head Track and Field Coach Patrick Bendzick.
The Tartans will be well represented at the C.I.F. Preliminaries next Saturday in Carpinteria, with 27 athletes moving on to the next level with their sights set on making a statement in Division 4 of C.I.F. Championships.
